The editor was not without sympathy for Katie. The atmosphere created by Debs had been poisonous for weeks. He enjoyed Katie’s bubbly personality and her can-do attitude but even he knew that the tension in the main office was so bad that it would explode, as it had done today. In his heart of hearts, he had hoped it would be Debs standing before him when that day came, but it was not to be. It was however a solution, and sadly he agreed that Katie should leave with immediate effect. Her papers and pay would be sent on to her.

As she walked through the office for the last time, she saw Debs’ cronies crowding around her as she soaked up the outpouring sympathy. Mac and Charlotte were standing waiting for her. When she told them that she was leaving, Charlotte rushed around her desk to hug her. “You will be missed,” was all she could say, because tears welled up in her eyes and her throat closed on her. Katie, who was being so brave, could feel her own eyes sting as she tried to lock back her own tears. She squeezed her friend goodbye. Mac just held out his hand and wished her good luck. It was all too much; she grabbed her handbag, gave her friends one final hug, with a promise to stay in touch, and walked out the main door with her head held high. It was December14th; not exactly how she had intended Christmas to start that year.
